Windows XP VPN (PPTP) client setup instructions: The below instructions were created for a Windows XP user.

| | Before you setup the MS VPN client on your WinXP machine:
A. You must have a valid WSU NetworkID name and password.
B. You must have a valid Active Directory Account that is enabled and unlocked. |
| | NOTE: If you are a Wireless user on the Pullman Campus... Is your wireless adapter enabled? Make sure it is enabled (Pulllman Campus users should get the SSID of 'wsunexus'). Goto your Start, Control Panel, Network Connections window and check out your wireless connection. Disable the wired 'ethernet' connection when you wish to use the wireless connection (and vice-versa)... |

| | 1. Click on the Windows 'Start' icon. | |  |

| | 2. Click on 'Control Panel' to get the window of all Control Panel icons. | |  |

| | 3. Click on the 'Network Connections' icon to begin the process of setting up a new network connection.
NOTE: we are showing you two different icons because your XP machine may be setup in either Category View or Classic View. | |

| | 4. Click on the 'Create a connection' to begin the process of setting up the VPN connection. | |  XP Category View | OR |  XP Classic View |

| | 5. XP Classic View ONLY ---> The two JPEG screen images displayed to the right 0NLY appear if your XP machine is configured in the 'XP Classic View'.
'XP Classic View' users should click on the 'Next >' button. When the 2nd screen is displayed, select the 'Connect to the network at my workplace' radio button, then click on the 'Next ' button.
Non-Classic View 'XP Category View' users can skip this step and proceed to Step 6. below. | |  |

| | 6. Select the 'Virtual Private Network connection' radio button, then click on the 'Next >' button. | |  |

| | 7. Type in a name for this connection. We selected:
Volcan Network
then click on the 'Next >' button. | |  |

| | 8. Some users may see the following screen ---> Select the 'Do not dial the initial connection', then click on the 'Next >' button. | |  |

| | 9a. Type in the name of the VPN device.

| | 9b. Optional screen for users who log into a DOMAIN ---> Users who log into a DOMAIN may receive a window as shown to the right. You may want to select the "Anyone's use" radio button to allow others to use the VPN client...
IF you do not see this screen, continue to the next step. | |  |

| | 9c. Optional screen for users who have 'Smart Cards' ---> Some users will see a screen prompting them for the use of 'Smart Cards'. We have selected 'Do not use my smart card' in this screen.

| | 10. You may want to click the 'Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop', then click on the 'Finish' button. | |  |

| | 11. XP Classic View users will see this window now pop up on the screen. XP Non-Classic View users will NOT see the window pop up automatically.They will need to click on the newly created connection icon to bring up the window.
At this point, you still need to click on the 'Properties' button of the VPN login window. One more setup item needs to be carried out. | |  |

| | 12. Click on the 'Security' tab near the top of the window. | |  |

| | 13. UnCheck the box next to the 'Require data encyption' selection. Encryption isn't required!
IF you want your VPN client to always use the same logon name, password (and domain name) typed in during the initial computer boot up process when connecting across the wireless network, then place a check in the 'Automatically use my Windows logon....' check box. However, you may want to leave this box un-checked if other people having other names and passwords want to run your MS VPN client on your machine (after you have booted the machine for them using your login information).
Then, click on the Options tab to view the next configuration window. | |  |

| | 14a. NOTE: the 2nd and 3rd check boxes will be 'greyed out' if you selected the "Automatically use my Windows logon name..." check box in item #13 above.
If not greyed out, then place a check in the box labeled 'Include Windows logon domain'. This gives you the option to specify a Windows DOMAIN during the login process.

| | 14b. Select the Networking tab, then in "Type of VPN" box, select the option "PPTP VPN". | |  |

| | 15. You are now ready to test out your MS vpn client.
--- Wireless users only --- Disable all NICs, then Enable the Wireless NIC... Before typing in your WSU NetworkID and password, (and for some users a Windows DOMAIN name), you may want to make sure the only interface enabled on your computer is your WIRELESS card. You can go to 'Start', 'Control Panel', 'Network Connections' and Disable (right click on each icon to enable/disable) all LAN Connections, then Enable your WIRELESS connection. (You may want to place icons of each interface on your Desktop so you can quickly enable/disable them in the future).
Make sure you have a good connection with the available wireless Access Point(s) in your area.
--- ALL users --- Finally, type in your WSU NetworkID and password, (and for some users a Windows DOMAIN name), then click on the 'Connect' button.

| | 16. The first message should show a connection attempt to vpn-gateway.wsu.edu. | |  |

| | 17. The second message should show verification of username and password. | |  |
| |
| |
| |
| | 18. The third message should show registration on the network. | |  |
| |

| | 19. The last window is displayed so quickly that you may miss it. | |  |
| |

| |
| | If successful, you will now be connected to the WSU network. You may see a message and icon appear in your Windows Toolbar indicating that you are now connected.

| | Don't forget to Disconnect your VPN session when you are finished!
Just click on the small, Windows toolbar icon that appears on the item 20 screen shot above... Clicking on the icon will bring up the VPN client window and allow you to do a Disconnect. | | |

| | Possible Errors: |
| |
If un-successful, you may see an error message similar to one of the images displayed to the right... Error 691: The name and password typed are not being authenticated properly. Try again.
Error 769: The host name or destination name configured in the "General" tab may be mistyped (vpn-gateway.wsu.edu) or DNS resolution of this name is not taking place. Please remove any manually typed DNS addresses from your Control Panel, Network, Wireless Connection and reboot.
Error 781: Make sure in the VPN client Properties, Networking tab that you have identified "PPTP VPN" as the selection in the "Type of VPN" window.
Trouble Shooting:
1. Make sure your WSU NetworkID and password were typed with the correct upper/lower case...
2. Make sure your wireless card has a good signal...
3. Disable all wireless and ethernet interfaces, then just enable the wireless interface and attempt to logon again.
4. Reboot your machine and try once more...
